Scarring Alopecia

Scarring hair loss, also known as cicatricial alopecia, is a type of hair loss that occurs when hair follicles are permanently destroyed and replaced by scar tissue. Unlike androgenetic alopecia, which is caused by genetics and hormones, scarring hair loss is caused by underlying medical conditions or physical damage to the hair follicles. Some common causes of scarring hair loss include autoimmune diseases (such as lupus), skin conditions (such as lichen planopilaris), and physical trauma (such as burns or scalp infections). Scarring hair loss can lead to permanent hair loss if not treated, and it may also be accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, redness, and pain. Treatment for scarring hair loss depends on the underlying cause and may include topical steroids, topical minoxidil, or systemic medications. A dermatologist is best equipped to diagnose scarring hair loss and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
