Signs of Skin Cancer That You Should Know

Sun exposure sneaks up on you, and the effects of the ultraviolet rays accumulate throughout your lifetime. That means the time you spent out in the sun as a teenager can show up as sun damage decades later. Accumulated sun exposure can also lead to skin cancer. Our Boise Dermatologist Dr. Heather Layher and her team at Idaho Dermatology Mohs Collective provide comprehensive dermatology services, including diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer.

What You Need To Know About Skin Cancer

There are early warning signs of skin cancer you should know. You need to look for:

  • Changes in the color, shape, or size of a mole

  • Skin changes occurring after a mole is removed

  • Bleeding and oozing coming from a mole

  • An open sore that doesn’t heal

  • Scaly or rough patches of skin

  • A “pimple” that never goes away

  • Changes in your fingernails or toenails

You may notice some of these signs by doing a self-check of your skin regularly. You need to look for moles that are:

  • Ragged, irregularly shaped, or asymmetric

  • Multiple colors

  • New or changing moles

  • Recurring, after the previous removal

If you notice any of these signs, you need to visit our dermatology providers for a skin check. You should also schedule skin checks at least once each year if you are at higher risk of skin cancer. People who are at higher risk of skin cancer have:

  • Light skin and freckles

  • A history of tanning bed use

  • A previous history of skin cancer

  • A family history of skin cancer

Remember you can do a lot to prevent skin cancer. You should:

  • Avoid using tanning beds

  • Use an SPF of at least 30 every day and ensure your sunscreen contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (physical sunscreen)

  • Use an SPF of at least 50 every day if you have fair skin, freckles, or sunburn easily

  • Use an SPF of at least 50 if you are outside for long periods

  • Stay out of direct sunlight between 10 AM and 4 PM

  • Wear protective clothing, a hat, and sunglasses
