Warts

Warts are small, rough growths on the skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can occur anywhere on the body, but are most common on the hands, fingers, and feet. Warts can be raised or flat, and may have a smooth or rough surface. They can be single or multiple and may grow in clusters. Warts are highly contagious and can be spread through direct contact with the virus, as well as through contact with contaminated objects such as towels, razors, nail clippers, and walking surfaces.

Treatment for warts depends on the type, location, and size of the wart. Over-the-counter or prescription topical treatments, such as salicylic acid, can be used to dissolve the wart. Other treatment options include cryotherapy (freezing) and topical medications applied in-office. It is important to see a dermatologist if you have warts, especially if they are painful, changing in appearance, or spreading, as they can provide a diagnosis and recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your individual needs.
