Cold Sores
Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are small, fluid-filled blisters that occur around the mouth or on the lips. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) and are highly contagious. Treatment options for cold sores include topical or oral antiviral medications such as acyclovir and valacyclovir. Preventative measures include avoiding close contact with individuals who have active cold sores, avoiding sharing personal items such as towels and razors, and avoiding touching the face, particularly the mouth and eyes, to prevent the spread of the virus. In those with history of cold sores, it is also important to wear chapstick with SPF as sun exposure can lead to outbreaks. It's important to see a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment of cold sores, especially for individuals with frequent or severe outbreaks.
